History and Company Overview

Hertz was founded in 1918 by Walter L. Jacobs, who put up a car rental business in Chicago with several Model T Ford cars. He eventually sold the business to John D. Hertz five years later, and Hertz made it a subsidiary of company before renaming it as “Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System.”

The company was then sold to General Motors in 1925, and its remaining shares were purchased by the automobile company in 1943.  Seven years later, the company goes overseas and begins its operations in Europe.

In 1954, Hertz was bought by Omnibus Corporation. It then went public on the New York Stock Exchange. It became a subsidiary of the Radio Corporation of America in 1967.

In the 60s, Hertz faced tough competition from new firms offering car rental services brought about by the expansion of the travel industry. Despite these challenges, the company was able to retain its top spot because of the guidance of  Jacobs, a car rental veteran.

The company however went through different ownerships. In 1985, the company was acquired by the holding company of United Airlines.

Hertz was then sold to Park Ridge Corporation, which was then bought by Ford Motors. In the 90s, Hertz was spun off as a public company.

Hertz rental cars were made available in other countries like Russia and those in Eastern Europe in the 90s. Likewise, rental cars of Hertz were offered in Canada, Australia, and parts of the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.

Today, Hertz Corporation is the largest car rental company in the world. It has more than 30 million rentals and is located in 6,500 places in more than 140 countries. It has a fleet of more than 550,000 vehicles, with 300,000 of these in the United States.

The Hertz trucking business can be traced back to 1954 when it acquired the Metropolitan Distributors, a New York truck leasing company.
